What does the team do and how does it help consumers?

We work to improve consumer rights and protections across a wide range of areas, including preventing unsafe products being offered for sale, improving food standards and price transparency, ensuring people are correctly compensated when holidays go wrong and supporting people to make more sustainable choices.

Tell us about a recent achievement

We’ve recently influenced a draft fundamental law on digital markets, competition and consumers that’ll make it easier to hold businesses to account if they ignore consumer rights. Our campaigning on food affordability led to government commitments to improve how prices are displayed in supermarkets. We also highlighted consumer issues with the public electric vehicle charging network that contributed to new regulations on reliability and payments.

What’s next?

We aim to improve failing customer service across key sectors consumers rely on. We build on consumer law reforms, proposing wider reform of Trading Standards, controls to prevent unsafe products on online marketplaces and tackle misleading pricing practices. We’re also developing proposals for how households can be supported to improve their home insulation and transition to low carbon heating.

What kind of qualifications and experience do you have?

While no specific qualification is needed, team members generally have a relevant degree or postgraduate qualification. Our experience comes from previous roles and ‘on the job’ at Which?. We’ve led international consumer advocacy on food, financial services and digital rights at the United Nations, OECD and World Trade Organisation. We’ve worked within government and with trade bodies and have on-the-ground experience of enforcement in Trading Standards and Environmental Health, plus significant experience of consumer law and international dispute resolution policy and practice.
