Portrait of Amrick

Current position

I am a Lead Product Manager, looking after the Which? mobile apps. It's been such a fascinating journey from when I started back in 2020. I was given the briefing of building a new mobile app strategy and figure out what we should do with the apps. In Product, my role spans many different areas and I am exposed to most, if not every team in the organisation. I work primarily with my cross functional team of engineers, designers and tester and it is our responsibility to build and maintain our mobile products. My role centres around exploring which problems we should be solving, and working with my team to solve those problems for UK consumers, in ways that benefit Which? as an organisation.

Key experience

Started as a designer, and ended up in Product Management.

I studied Computer Science at University, which led me into my first role as a user experience designer when I was 22. I spent a couple of years doing that, before moving into Product Management. After a few more years I decided to go into freelancing for a while, where I had the chance to gain good experience across different industries and sectors. From launching apps to building websites, the experience was great as I had the chance to get exposed to different ways of working, different managerial styles and meet new people. My career so far has led me to Which?, working as a Lead Product Manager.

Motivation for working at Which?

My role as a Product Manager means I do need to wear many different hats. Having a level of understanding and appreciation for how we actually build software products is important, just as it is to understand things like design thinking or the legal side of things. Product at Which? is inspired by the likes of Marty Cagan of SVPG (read his blog, it's fantastic). Product Managers are given a lot of autonomy to figure out what the right thing to build is within the constraints of the product area.

This is every Product Managers' dream right?! We use OKRs at Which?, and there is a collaborative process where the team create them and work to get buy-in from stakeholder groups to help ensure alignment and support to deliver those objectives and key results. It really is a good way of working, and helps ensure we're working on the right things, avoid huge roadmap conflicts. Which? is also incredibly flexible with our ways of working. We have a hybrid work week split been the office and WFH, which allows for a nice balance between collaboration work with the team, and deep individual work.

Greatest achievement

Launching the new Which? mobile app

Back in November 2021 my team and I launched the new Which? app. It was a huge journey that we started at the beginning of 2021, in the height of lockdowns. As part of the mobile app strategy we bought the development in-house. We have seen steady success and we're now in full steam executing our objectives.

Top Advice

I try to live by the mantra that consistence is everything. If you are consistent in your approach to learning and self development, then I reckon you will go a long way in your career. This could be as simple as learning something new every week. After 1 year you'll have learnt 52 new things you didn't know before! It all adds up when you think of the long term. Working hard doesn't guarantee success, but it gives you a much better chance at it. If you work hard in your role, a place like Which? does really well at rewarding effort.

Why did you choose this company?

Which? stands up for what is right for the consumer. This can be as simple as reviewing every day products to help raise overall standards, through to mounting legal challenges against companies that are harming consumers the most. There is substance to our vision and what we're trying to achieve to help make society a better place to live.

The work life balance is great. I need to do school runs and the flexible / hybrid working means I can do it without worrying. It makes me more motivated and want to work harder because I have this flexibility.

Direction of product and tech. It's a huge challenge to transform lots of legacy technology, but this is what Which? is going through right now. I truly think that over the coming years, Which? is going to be one of the companies leading and innovating in this space.
