In Group Legal and Governance (GLG), we are trusted expert advisers, helping the organisation make decisions that are right for Which? and consumers.  Within GLG, Which?'s in-house legal function, Group Legal, provides a full range of legal support across the organisation's wide-ranging activities, from general commercial, contract and data privacy advice through to consumer policy development and advocacy, consumer rights, libel and defamation, IP and strategic litigation.

About the role

As part of the high-performing and impactful Media & Strategic Litigation team within Group Legal, you will deliver pragmatic legal advice on a wide range of legal issues at pace.  A significant focus of the role is supporting Which?'s Policy & Advocacy division, where you will directly contribute to our mission to make life simpler, fairer, and safer for UK consumers by supporting policy development and advocacy, national campaigns and strategic legal actions.   You will proactively and confidently engage internal and external stakeholders, build collaborative and effective relationships and positively contribute to Which?'s success.

This role reports to our Managing Counsel – Media & Strategic Litigation. 

Key responsibilities include: 

• Advising on consumer-related sector-specific legislation and regulations and responses to legislative developments and policy maker consultations, like the work we did to influence the passage and implementation of the Online Safety Act 2023 and Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. 
• Advising on consumer campaigns, policy development and engagement with policy makers and business, like our End the Insurance Rip-Offs and Protect Online Shoppers campaigns.
• Supporting the consideration and strategic use of legal powers or tools, such as interventions, private enforcement, judicial review and collective actions, like our iCloud collective action and interventions in Philipp v Barclays.  
• Supporting broader legal areas covered by the Group Legal team, for example advising on commercial initiatives, like the customer journey and terms and conditions for new products, and media activities, like our independent research and undercover investigations, upskilling where necessary.

About you

You'll: 

• Be a qualified lawyer of at least 2+ PQE, ideally with experience in a consumer-related policy, regulatory or campaigning environment;
• Have demonstrable experience advising on consumer-related issues and contentious/regulatory matters;
• Be able to identify and understand legal issues, including by upskilling in unfamiliar areas of law, and deliver pragmatic, user-friendly, solution-focused advice proactively and at pace;
• Be a confident and effective communicator who works collaboratively with others;
• Have a strong sense of personal accountability, be highly organised, and able to effectively manage your workload and stakeholder expectations;
• Be a continuous learner, committed to your personal development and knowledge-sharing.

• First round interview with the Managing Counsel - Media & Strategic Litigation and a member of the Media & Strategic Litigation team, including a practical, scenario-based assessment.
• Second round interview with the Head of Legal and Head of Consumer Rights and Food Policy.
