Who are we?

Which? is the UK's consumer champion, here to make life simpler, fairer and safer for everyone. As an organisation we're not for profit and all for making consumers more powerful.

Come and champion consumers with us – it's important work. As people we're brave, caring, rigorous and insightful in the way we connect with each other to make change happen.

Why?

We are introducing a Staff Product Engineer to allow us to meet increased expectations on product engineering as we continue our organisational transformation to become a product led organisation (project to product).

A key part of the transformation is embracing modern engineering practices enabling us to deliver better products faster. We are looking for experienced Staff Product Engineers that have worked in scaled product & engineering organisations and can help accelerate our journey to become a more mature and effective product engineering team.

What do we expect?

You will provide a high level of technical expertise and leadership within your product area, supporting existing Tech Leads through your deep technical knowledge. We are specifically looking for people who have the following characteristics:

  • Problem solver: You will be taking on some of the most challenging engineering problems facing our organisation, and in some cases this will involve driving a team of engineers towards delivering a successful outcome. We are looking for people who focus on solving problems pragmatically while adding value to the product, rather than focussing on specific languages or toolsets.
  • Data-driven and impact-focussed: You will always have our customers/users in mind, and ensure that any features or changes you build can be either quantitatively or qualitatively proven to have a positive impact. You will also regularly review all the data you have available to identify and suggest potential improvements.
  • Collaborative by default: You will be working within a multi-disciplinary squad focussed on a specific domain with specific outcomes, and it is key for you to work together to achieve those outcomes.
  • Curious and Proactive: You will never be happy with the status-quo, so will constantly be looking for ways to improve the product, whether that is through technology or by changing internal processes and practices
  • Our key technologies are: TypeScript (Node and React) and AWS.

What kind of work might I do?

  • You will be working with your squad and product area leads to identify new features and changes that will have a positive impact on our organisational OKRs, providing technical feasibility on those ideas, developing tests and spikes to validate the ideas and finally bringing those ideas into reality.
  • You will be working closely with your product area leads, squad members, external stakeholders (including board members) and users to understand their requirements in more detail
  • You will be leading the technical implementation of the most complex projects in your product area through to completion, including writing tickets, directing other engineers towards its final goal and working collaboratively across squads where necessary. You will also work closely with Principals and other Engineering leadership members to ensure alignment with architecture and standards.
  • You will be working closely with other engineers in your product area, and so will be responsible for helping them grow, including through feedback from PRs, pair programming and identifying opportunities for mentoring. You will also want to help your squad become better, through coaching or identifying process improvements.
  • You will be a champion for all engineering best practices, including accessibility, security and quality.
  • We are currently transitioning towards a “You build it, you run it” model, so you will have experience of this culture and can help support your team towards that goal.
  • You will help foster a culture of ownership and accountability within your product area, supporting incident management and ensuring a safe space for engineers to experiment.

The interview process for this role involves:-

  • Stage 1: 60 minute Ways of Working interview
  • Stage 2: Take home test
  • Stage 3: 60 minute Technical interview
  • We will also run a reverse interview with the squad you will be working in, but that will be after we have offered the position to you.
